Boston Limited, now in its 18th year as a distribution partner for silicon valley based Super Micro Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCI), today has formally announced a raft of new low power server and data centre technologies being launched and showcased at the annual Data Centre World Conference & Expo held at the Barbican Centre in London on Tuesday 23rd of February 2010.
"With data centres rapidly increasing in terms of size, power budgets and cooling capacity the impact on both the environment and our own wallets is more apparent than ever" says Manoj Nayee Managing Director of Boston Limited. "As more and more data centres are starting to hit their energy envelopes the majority of organisations are finally starting to pay more attention to tracking their power consumption and looking into more efficient cooling strategies; in fact in today's data centres cooling is now more of a significant factor of the two".
To counteract these issues Boston provides a variety of innovative solutions designed to improve the computational power efficiency of today's data centres. With most data centres set to be spending more on operational costs in terms of energy consumption and cooling as is spent on their hardware infrastructure itself there has never been a better time for companies to review their IT infrastructure and review their existing supply chains.
With numerous companies choosing to use online tools to calculate power calculations many have found the accuracy of such information or vendor assurances to be sorely lacking and unfortunately sometimes grossly inaccurate; to help alleviate this problem Boston offers the channel the unique ability to test our platforms and confirm our power saving statements before any investments are made in the purchase and deployment of new hardware.
At Data Centre World Boston will be unveiling the latest evolution in their range of liquid cooled server and storage solutions. With the exclusive use of liquid cooling data centres could reduce their cooling costs by up to a phenomenal 93% cost reduction when compared to air cooling.
This exciting solution features patented "modular immersion technology" from Iceotope that leverages the thermal superiority of liquids to reduce the operating costs of data centres and large scale computing facilities. Each server motherboard is immersed in an individually sealed bath of inert liquid coolant which passively transfers heat away from the sensitive electronics to a tightly integrated heat exchanger formed by the wall of the bath where water is continuously recirculated and cooled.
Compared to traditional air cooling systems the two liquids are thousands of times more effective in capturing and transferring heat, thereby requiring much less energy to run the overall system as the water can be allowed to run warmer whilst still providing adequate cooling. Boston's solution eliminates the requirement for CRAC (computer room air conditioning) units and reduces the need to operate chillers by exchanging heat directly with the air outside the data centre.
Boston will also be demonstrating their new range of Fenway Virtualised server and storage solutions which have been designed from the ground upwards to provide industry leading energy efficiency based on the latest generation of server and virtualisation technologies. Using the latest VT suites from vendors such as Microsoft, VMware and Citrix Boston Fenway virtualised solutions can provide up to a staggering 80% of savings in terms of energy cost and consumption.
On display at Boston's stand will be Supermicro's industry leading Twin Blade platform running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2; the solution includes 20 blade servers housed into a single power optimised 7U server enclosure which operates at up to 94% power efficiency. The sheer range of consolidation capabilities provided by this platform are previously unheard of. No compromises have been made in terms of specification with support for the latest Six and Quad Core CPU's from Intel and AMD combined with a variety of flexible storage options and high speed 10GbE and QDR InfiniBand networking configurations available!
Boston's new generation of GP Green power server platforms will also represented on their stand with the Igloo 2100T server solution that is packaged into an ultra short depth 1U chassis featuring the latest Intel dual core processors. This power optimised solution can be mounted back to back within suitable rack enclosures and most importantly of all consumes an extraordinary 30W of power under full load; to put this into perspective this is a fully fledged server running at full load that consumes half the power consumption of a 60W light bulb!
