LSI have announced that Supermicro has selected LSI 6Gb/s SAS RAID-on-Chip (ROC) and MegaRAID products to enable next-generation entry- to enterprise-server platforms.
Supermicro adds to a growing list of tier-one OEMs that have selected LSITM ROC and SAS technology to provide enabling silicon and software solutions as the market readies for the transition to 6Gb/s SAS technology.
"LSI has proven itself as a SAS and RAID technology leader year after year, technology generation after generation," said Charles Liang, CEO and president of Supermicro. "We are committed to providing our customers with superior product innovations and uncompromising quality. We rely on partners such as LSI to provide robust and highly interoperable underlying technologies to ensure a smooth transition to 6Gb/s SAS-based server platforms."
According to industry estimates, 6Gb/s SAS market adoption will begin in mid-to-late 2009. Individual 6Gb/s SAS components and devices are expected to appear in the market first, with widespread production volume shipments of 6Gb/s SAS-enabled servers occurring by end of year.
The LSI 6Gb/s SAS solutions build upon the market-leading LSI SAS 3Gb/s technology products, delivering performance and power-saving advantages as compared to other silicon alternatives, along with the added assurance gained from robust interoperability testing.
"As a leading provider of SAS technologies, our validation across the industry's broadest spectrum of OEM platforms is unmatched, allowing us to leverage this experience in each new generation of solutions," said Bill Wuertz, senior vice president, Storage Components Group, LSI. "As the market readies for the transition to 6Gb/s SAS technology, LSI is the vendor of choice among many of the world's leading server OEMs to enable their next-generation SAS-based systems."
