With the rapid uptake of space optimised server hardware increasing at an immense
pace across all industries, the impact on the environment for these traditionally
power hungry platforms has long been shouting out for a change.
Traditionally you could not have both high performance and low power consumption
- the technologies simply have not existed for quite some time. However, this has
now changed with the combined expertise of leading processor, chipset, motherboard,
power supply and component vendors who are all now working to offer power efficient
platforms.
Manufacturers such as Supermicro offer 85% and above power efficiency on their server
grade power supplies, clearly illustrating how applying some further thought and
engineering expertise, one does not necessarily need to lose any power. Another
prime example would be Intel's high acclaimed core architecture; here we have a
technology that has pushed the performance envelope further than before yet through
utilising power efficient packaging and optimised thermal design the new "faster"
processors consume "less" power than previous generations.
